NAPLAN Tutoring Sydney

EDUCO Tutoring runs NAPLAN classes for Sydney students in Years 1 to 6, on campus at Edmondson Park and Homebush West or online. We teach in small groups of up to seven students, building the reading, writing and numeracy skills NAPLAN measures.

Why We Start in Year 1, Not Year 3

Students sit NAPLAN in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. That is the testing schedule, not the preparation schedule.

Our programme runs from Year 1 to Year 6. NAPLAN measures skills that accumulate: decoding, comprehension, sentence structure, spelling patterns, number sense. A child who reaches Year 3 with those foundations sits the test comfortably and only needs to learn the format. A child without those foundations cannot build them in a few weeks.

Almost every NAPLAN programme in Sydney starts in the test year. Ours starts when the skills do. Students who go on to sit the Opportunity Class or Selective tests move into our OC preparation classes and Selective classes. For Years 7 and 9, see our high school tutoring.

What the Four NAPLAN Tests Assess

NAPLAN has four tests:

Reading — understanding and interpreting a range of texts
Writing — responding to a prompt in a narrative or persuasive genre
Conventions of language — spelling, grammar and punctuation
Numeracy — number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics and probability

We teach all four as classroom skills, not test tricks. Writing gets particular attention, because structure and consistent practice make the most visible difference there.

How to Read Your Child’s Report

Results are reported against four proficiency levels:

Exceeding — exceeds expectations at the time of testing
Strong — meets challenging but reasonable expectations
Developing — working towards expectations
Needs additional support — not achieving expected outcomes, likely to need extra help

A report is a snapshot of one week, not a verdict. What matters is which domain sits lowest and whether it has moved since last time. We read it with you and turn it into a plan.

When Should Preparation Start?

NAPLAN is held in March, and the 2027 test window is 10 to 22 March. Working back from that: assess in Term 4 the year before, consolidate reading fluency and number facts over summer, then use Term 1 for online format familiarisation and timed practice. Test week itself needs routine and rest, not new content.

Families who start in February are not preparing; they are cramming.

How Our Classes Work

Small-group classes are our core offering, capped at 7 students, so the teacher sees every child’s work during the lesson rather than marking it later. One-on-one tutoring is available for students who need to move at their own pace.

Students are matched by academic level and learning style, not just school year. Each receives their own class booklets and materials, and our Edu Bucks reward system gives them something to work towards in order to complete homework.
